Allen Hayes writes: " Where other
Pueblos made dough bowls and chili bowls that curved upwards to the rim,
Hopi potters modified the shape. From the 1800s on, the Hopis made
"mutton bowls" with slightly flared rims. The shape may have been
borrowed from commercial china, and it's scarce outside of Hopi.
This mid-sized bowl has a wonderful high polish and hard finish that
suggests high-temperature coal firing, one reason it's in exceptional
condition for a piece that's been around for most of a century."
$1500.
