Allen Hayes writes: "Carmelita was raised
by her aunts, Maria Martinez and Desideria Sanchez, who taught her how to
make pottery. She became on the the highest-priced and most
sought-after San Ildefonso potters. The "Carmelita Cata" signature
baffled us until San Ildefonso pottery historian Elvis Torres told us
about her early short-lived marriage. These appear in Collections
of Southwestern Pottery on page 21."
