Allen Hayes writes: " An example of "San
Ildefonso Polychrome," made at San Ildefonso beginning about 1885. Late
19th century San Ildefonso pieces were stone-polished to a hard, smooth
surface. Beginning after 1905, San Ildefonso potterys rag-polished a slip
imported from Cochiti Pueblo that produced a granulated surface. (Most
polychrome pieces made by Maria Martinez between 1905 and 1925 were rag
polished.)."
